The Meatspace Gallery is owned by John McGarvey, a Long Island City resident and community volunteer, the gallery will be hosting artworks related to nature and environmental concerns, as well as human powered transportation, such as biking or kayaking.

The gallery is managed by Charme Chen who hails from Taiwan. We're always on the lookout for talented curators interested in setting up shows in the space.

We would like to thank our wonderful patrons, Plaxall Inc. for providing affordable space for the gallery, our boathouse and our resident artists.

We would also like to thank the great folks at Queens Council on the Arts for their ongoing support and guidance.

The gallery is located in the former Freirich meat packing plant, overlooking the East River and midtown Manhattan. The building is now owned by Plaxall Inc, a family run business that is outstanding in community service, support for the arts and vision.

The building is being transformed into volunteer community services and art hub. Sharing the old plant is
Recycle-a-bicycle, the Long Island City Community Boathouse, the MeatSpace Gallery and individual studio spaces
for artists, writers and craftspeople.

About the building

The family patriarch, Julian Freirich, started the company in 1921 with a small meat processing operation in Long Island City. The company specialized in smoked beef tongues and smoked pork butts.

The company moved to North Carolina in January of 2006. You can see their logo on the front of the building set in stone. We are leaving much of the plant infrastructure in place and incorporating it into the art and functionality of its repurposing.
